Sable (Safe
from Abuse and Battered Living
Environments)
House was started in 1993 by the grassroots efforts
of a small group of women in Polk County. The focus of
the organization in 1993 was support groups and a 24-hour
crisis hotline. In 1996, a 4,500 sq. ft. shelter facility
was built with funding from a community development block grant. In
early 1999, we launched a county-wide community education
campaign and started providing support groups for children. In
2000, we added a support group for Spanish-speaking women. In
2002, we led the implementation of a county-wide sexual
assault response team and we began providing support groups
for teens. And in 2004 we started a support group
in Grand Ronde. We received the “Outstanding Organization
Award” at the 2000 Chamber of Commerce Community Awards
Celebration, and in 2003 our efforts to provide culturally
appropriate services were recognized by the Spirit Mountain
Community Fund.
Today we offer 24-hour crisis services including confidential
shelter, support group for women and children, accompaniment
to the hospital, advocacy through the legal and social service
systems, information and referral, transportation for families
who need it, and extensive community outreach and education
about our services. Our Mission To eliminate domestic and sexual violence in Polk County
by providing safe confidential services to
victims and by educating the community about the issues.
